Over the past few months, Junaina Noman, Ayi Khumbula, and Autumn Enu (year 10)  have taken part in the HRUC Innovation Challenge, an initiative that challenges young people to address some of the world’s most pressing issues by designing innovations that contribute to a more sustainable future.

As part of the challenge, the team developed an app called Cleara, designed to reduce littering by encouraging individuals to collect rubbish within their local communities. By using prompts, rewards, and incentives, Cleara transforms environmental clean-up into a fun, engaging, and community-driven activity, motivating people to take pride in their surroundings while making a positive environmental impact.

The competition began with 189 schools from across the country and progressed through several stages, culminating in a final that featured just four secondary schools and four sixth form colleges. Reaching the final was an exceptional achievement and a testament to the team’s creativity, dedication, and problem-solving skills. We are incredibly proud of all that they accomplished.

Although they were not named overall winners, the team received a commendation in recognition of the quality and impact of their work. Their journey through the competition demonstrates not only innovation and resilience, but also the growing contribution of young women within STEM fields. Junaina, Ayi, and Autumn have set an inspiring example, and their achievement marks an exciting step forward in what we are confident will be bright and impactful futures.
