Dear parents and carers,
As we finish this school year, we can reflect on the many achievements of our students, and successes of our school, of which we can feel incredibly proud. Our rewards assemblies this week have been a brilliant celebration of our young people and of their determination to be the best version of themselves, and all this is testament to the exceptional support they receive from their teachers and wider support staff across the school to ensure they achieve their very best, academically and personally.
I take this opportunity to thank our dedicated and talented staff across the school who work relentlessly for the best for our young people. It has been a challenging year in many ways, but the collective vision we have for our school community continues to bring us all strength to overcome hurdles and strive for the very best.
For the small number of staff who are leaving us at the end of this term, we wish you all the very best in your next steps and thank you for your commitment to SRS over the years. A special mention to Mr Mensah, Head of Maths, who leaves us to pursue opportunities outside of teaching, and Ms Oates, our librarian of 13 years, both of whom have made a significant contribution to the work of the school over the years and will be greatly missed.
I thank you, parents, carers and wider family members, for your continued support of our school and your children as they pursue their academic and personal goals. I am delighted that we can celebrate such a successful year for your children and I look forward to our continued partnership in the new academic year ahead.
Ahead of the return in September, I ask you to note the following updates. These have been shared with all students and are reflected in our updated policies, approved by governors, which will be published on the school website from September.
Uniform Expectations
During the final few weeks of this term, we relaxed some uniform expectations because of the exceptional hot weather. From the start of the Autumn Term, our normal uniform expectations will be fully reinstated. For secondary students, this includes students wearing their blazer underneath any outdoor coat, black leather school shoes, and black school trousers or a knee-length skirt
To make our expectations even clearer, we have also made two small changes to our uniform policy. These changes are designed to reduce the considerable amount of staff time currently spent addressing avoidable uniform issues and to ensure the policy can be applied consistently.
From September:
-
Religious headwear continues to be permitted. All other headwear is not permitted on the school site including in the playground.
-
Only outdoor coats may be worn over the school blazer. Hoodies, sports training tops, technical fleeces, tracksuit tops, windbreakers, shell jackets and similar athletic or fashion garments are not permitted and cannot be worn instead of a coat.
To support the consistent application of these expectations, any non-uniform items, including hats and hoodies, will be confiscated if brought onto the school site. Items can be collected by the student from the LSC (secondary) or primary reception as follows:
-
First confiscation: at the end of the same school day
-
Second confiscation: after five school days
-
Third and subsequent confiscations: at the end of the half-term
We appreciate your support in ensuring students arrive at school in the correct uniform each day. Working together will help us maintain high standards and allow staff to focus their time on teaching and supporting students.
Improving our secondary playground
One area identified by secondary students for improvement, including during the recent Ofsted inspection, was the playground. Following this feedback, a working group of staff and students explored how we could create a more enjoyable, inclusive and safer environment at break times.
The work of this group has directly informed plans for a wider, phased redesign of the playground. This longer-term work will be developed and implemented in stages over time. As part of this, we have already introduced access to the astroturf for football at break times on a year group rotation, which has been very well received by students.
From September, we will also be making some changes to break time basketball on the secondary site:
-
Basketball will move from the main playground to the courts behind Kingsley.
-
Sessions will be supervised by a member of staff and run on a year group rota.
-
The school will provide the basketballs.
-
Students should not bring basketballs into school. Basketballs will become a prohibited item, alongside footballs and any other types of ball.
Any basketballs brought into school will be confiscated in accordance with the confiscation procedure outlined earlier in this letter. The courts behind Kingsley will also be open and supervised after school, with basketballs provided by the school, so any student who wishes to play will have the opportunity to do so.
These changes will improve safety by removing basketball from the busy main playground and ensure students are not distracted by balls between lessons, reducing delays and helping everyone arrive to lessons on time.
There will also be a daily board games club for students who would prefer a quieter indoor space during break times.
Alongside these changes, we are finalising plans for the wider redevelopment of the playground. We look forward to sharing these exciting plans with students and parents early in the new academic year.
Other policy updates
We have made a small number of additional adjustments to ensure consistency across the school and to minimise disruption to learning time.
From September:
-
The duration of all relocation detentions (secondary) will increase to sixty minutes. This allows sufficient time for students to reflect on their behaviour and reset expectations before returning to lessons.
-
Students will be required to bring a whiteboard pen as an additional item of basic equipment each day.
These changes are designed to strengthen consistency across the school and ensure that valuable learning time is protected.

A13 Flyover at Lodge Avenue
As you may be aware, Transport for London have announced that the A13 flyover at Lodge Avenue is due to be closed from August. This is expected to last for two years and will cause significant delays to traffic on the A13 in both directions and is likely to push traffic into the neighbouring streets as drivers look for alternative routes. Many buses have also been rerouted as a result of this work.
Please could you take this into consideration when planning your child’s journey to and from school. If at all possible, students should avoid coming to school by car or bus and should consider walking or cycling to school. If your child needs to come by bus or car, please make sure they leave earlier and allow extra time for their journey so that they arrive on site before 8.30am. Further details can be found at TFL’s Lodge Avenue flyover replacement page.
Summer holiday activities
Summer activities available in the local area are included in this week’s newsletter. We also urge you to encourage your children, no matter their age, to read as much as possible during the summer break. We have published a fantastic guide to high-quality age-appropriate texts for your children to enjoy (see the school website: Recommended Reading for the Summer Holidays | The Sydney Russell School
A great way to stay motivated in your reading is by joining the Summer Reading Challenge 2026! You can sign up for FREE and get access to lots of books, activities and resources as well as track your progress in the challenge! https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/
You will find a suggested reading list on our school website, detailing books which can be easily sourced from your local library. You can also access FREE books and magazines through Press Reader using your library card details, take a look at https://www.pressreader.com/
Summer online safety
In line with our Mobile Device strategy, please continue to be vigilant of your child’s online activity throughout the summer break – please check their social media and messages to ensure they are behaving appropriately online. We strongly encourage a ‘digital sunset’ – a time in the day when phones/digital devices are put away/no longer used by children, to ensure they have sufficient breaks from screens.

Preparing for the new academic year
Once we have had a good break, our thoughts will turn to the new year ahead, and there are a few points I ask you to note:
-
To ensure we always maintain the highest standards of behaviour and conduct across the school, I ask you to re-familiarise yourself with the school’s behaviour policy which can be found on the school website, please read this carefully.
-
The behaviour policy also includes uniform expectations and I ask for your continued support in ensuring skirt lengths are correct (at least to the knee) and that trousers fit correctly at the waist and are worn at the waist. Any repeated breaches of this policy will result in students being given a sanction and there is an escalation policy in place.
-
All students are asked to note that a reading book and white board pen are compulsory items of school equipment for secondary students. For primary and KS3 students, this is a book from their reading scheme (including the accelerated reader programme). For students in Years 10-13, this can be an appropriate (see guidance on our reading lists) fiction or non-fiction book which can be sourced from our school library, home or a local library.
-
In the year ahead, a continued focus within our School Improvement Plan (SIP) will remain on developing students’ literacy skills, specifically oracy and reading. Therefore, your encouragement of your child’s reading during the summer break will further support their preparations for the new academic year ahead. I look forward to sharing further details on this and other school improvement priorities in September.
