Over this year, our SRS Robotics teams have taken part in the First Robotics competitions; First Tech Challenge and First Lego League - this is a STEM focused event for students from Year 7 to Year 13.
First Lego League asks our younger students to create a robot using Lego pieces, write the code and programme it to complete a series of missions.
First Tech Challenge involves our Sixth Formers who been preparing for this event - they built and programmed a robot from scratch to meet the requirements of the challenge. This entailed them to use transferable life skills as well as a broad range of specialist knowledge.
We took part in a scrimmage event in November, and then the full First Robotics competitions in March.
All our students have invested so much time into their robots, and it was a great opportunity to show off what they learned and invented and compete against schools from across the country.
Congratulations to everyone who competed, you all represented SRS brilliantly!
Here's the report from our junior SYD Media journalist Hiba:
First Lego League and First Tech Challenge
On Saturday 21st March 2026, our school took part in the First Lego League Challenge with students from year 8 to Year 11, and our Sixth Formers took part in the First Tech Challenge. These two competitions took place in The American School in London, the First Lego League were in the cafeteria and the First Tech were in the gymnasium.
Our First Lego League Team had the practice table where they could test and perfect their robot’s performance. The First Tech team had a place where they could repair broken parts, and they checked over their robot before each competition.
The First Lego League team did a presentation on the robot, before their first round. After the presentation, the judges asked questions on the presentation and they had to explain what their robot could do. Then with the First Lego League, they had their first round. To earn points, the robots had to complete ‘missions’. In their first round, SRS got 100 points and in the second round, 95 points. The teams had 2 minutes and 30 seconds in each round.
The First Tech team did incredibly well. Their aim was to get as many balls as they could into the goal, and they also had 2 minutes and 30 seconds to do this. Our First Tech team won many rounds and finished in 3rd place!
They may have encountered challenges, but both teams showcased perseverance and dedication, which was extraordinary.
